Azim Surani

Azim Surani (* 1945 in Kisumu , Kenya ) is an Indian-born developmental biologist and professor at the University of Cambridge in Cambridge , United Kingdom .

Surani is considered one of the leading researchers in the field of epigenetics . He has made particular contributions to research into the early embryonic development of mammals . He is considered to be the discoverer of genomic imprinting (1984). The biology of germ cells and stem cells are among his more recent research areas.

Life

Surani grew up as part of an Indian group of Ismaili Muslims in East Africa . He earned a first degree from the University of Plymouth , Plymouth, and an MSc in biochemistry from the University of Strathclyde , Glasgow . He then worked at Alexander Psychoyos at INSERM in Paris , before becoming a 1972 MRC -Stpendiat to Robert Edwards at the University of Cambridge in Cambridge , United Kingdom , changed, where he also with Patrick Steptoe worked and began to look for early embryonic development to interest .

Surani earned a Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge. The first laboratory under his responsibility was opened in 1979 at the Babraham Institute there. In 1991 he received a professorship - also at the University of Cambridge.
