MOFF Artists in Conversation - Szene Rheinland is a free print magazine from the art scene in the Rhineland with the editorial office in Cologne .

Editing and distribution

MOFF has been developed by Stefanie Klingemann (* 1977) since 2008 . The non-profit association MOFF eV has existed since 2011 to promote contemporary art projects. The art historian Anne Schloen, who lives in Cologne, worked in the MOFF team as co-editor from 2010 to 2014. The art historian Emmanuel Mir from Düsseldorf has been part of the editorial team since 2017 . Further editorial contributions and discussions were held. a. with Barbara Hess, Sabine Elsa Müller, Julia Reich, Barbara Hoffmann-Johnson , Ulrike Jagla-Blankenburg, Andreas Prinzing, Ulrike Grothe, Sabine Maria Schmidt and Johannes Stahl.

The magazine is available at art fairs such as Art Cologne , in galleries , offspaces , museums, archives, libraries, universities, as well as some bars and cafés in the Rhineland and beyond. The focus is on nine to twelve conversations with various actors from the art scene.

The format, layout and size of the magazine are subject to constant change and development. The MOFF magazine dispenses with branding , a logo or a corporate identity ; each issue is designed by a new team. The aim is a representative cross-section of the Rhineland art scene in the broader sense.

content

In MOFF, the artists have the opportunity to present their work to a broader public. The contributions to the conversation are not subject to any generally applicable principle and are based on the wishes and requirements of the conversation partners - whether images are inserted, links are provided or the conversation is conducted in a more scientific or completely free, sometimes also poetic form or more as a kind of monologue , is free here. Formats such as " carte blanche " have also appeared in individual editions, in which the artists were given complete freedom to design their own contribution, even outside of the layout designed for the respective edition .

With its discussions, the magazine offers a lively forum for conveying contemporary art. Examples of discussions were held with Candida Höfer , Gereon Krebber , Mary Bauermeister , Kasper König , Frances Scholz , Moritz Wesseler , Selma Validoprak and Yilmaz Dziewior , among others , and thus offers a platform not only to introduce young positions but also to established artists, art scholars and curators. Due to the fluctuation of the art market , the interlocutors invited over the years are now active in a large number of cities, experience international recognition or occupy positions at internationally important exhibition houses (for example Moritz Wesseler through his change as director of the Cologne Art Association to the management of the Friedericianum in Kassel ) . A complete list of all interlocutors can be found in the imprint of each magazine or on the website.

Each magazine offers an artist edition, which is developed and realized by one of the artists of the respective issue. The editions are of various forms, such as postcards or posters, for example by Mischa Kuball or the application of specially produced scented varnish by Rozbeh Asmani . Thanks to the free distribution of the magazine, the edition is also free of charge for the readers and thus enables the ownership of artistic work with a low threshold. Additional "collector's editions" are made available for sale by the artists and serve to preserve the magazine with their sale.

External perception

The magazine has been a fixture in the presentation of artistic, art-scientific and curatorial work in the Rhineland and beyond for 10 years now. Ragnhild Klußmann presents a key point in a report on the magazine's five-year existence in October 2014:

"With the continuity of five years now, you can also track artist biographies and understand developments and changes in the Cologne art scene."

- Ragnhild Klußmann : www.koelnarchitektur.de

Not least due to the presence of its own stand at Art Cologne, which has been taking place for several years, the magazine has achieved a Germany-wide and, thanks to the audience of the fair, also international reach. In 2012, the magazine received publication funding from the Art Fund Foundation and in 2017 from the Rhineland Regional Council . From the LVR's justification for funding, the link between the art scenes in Cologne and Düsseldorf is particularly emphasized in the magazine as creating a cultural identity.

Stefanie Klingemann was also honored in 2016 with the "Young Initiatives" prize, which was awarded for the first time as part of the Cologne Culture Awards , for her commitment to MOFF magazine and for 10qm , an art project in the public space in Cologne-Nippes.
