The Bore is a combined museum and hotel ship that has been moored in the Finnish city ​​of Turku since 2010 . The Bore , built in 1960 in Oskarshamn in Sweden as a passenger and car ferry , was the last steamship built for commercial use in Scandinavia and at the same time the first ferry on the route between Finland and Sweden that cars could drive directly (via a side hatch). From 1977 to 1987 she was called Borea , from 1988 to 2010 she was used as a cruise ship under the name Kristina Regina . As a museum ship, it has got its original name back.

history

The Bore was built in the Oskarshamn shipyard in Sweden . On April 5, 1960, it was transferred to the Finnish company Höyrylaiva Oy Bore ("Steamship Company Bore"), which then cooperated with Effoa and Stockholms Rederi AB Svea . The Silja Line emerged from this cooperation in 1970 . In its conception, the Bore reflected the time of upheaval in which it was created: The cooperation partners of the steamship company Bore were still oriented towards traditional ferry operations and were skeptical of RoRo ships . As a result, the Bore received a classic ship of the line design and even a quadruple expansion steam engine with steam turbine , but at the same time the RoRo capability via a lateral loading hatch.

Initially, the ship operated mainly on the Turku - Mariehamn - Stockholm route , but was also used between Helsinki and Stockholm. In 1972 the Bore received additional cabins during a renovation. Her employment with the Silja Line ended in September 1976, after which she was launched in Stockholm until October 1977 . It was sold to Jakob Lines , renovated and renamed Borea . In 1978 the Borea started the liner service between Jakobstad and Skellefteå . Jakob Lines generally only used the Borea in the summer, the rest of the time it was either launched or chartered to other companies. Among other things, she was used for a long time as an accommodation ship in Algeria .

In 1984 Jakob Lines sold the ship to the Finnish Aura Line , which offered a touristic liner service between Turku and Stockholm with Borea , but went bankrupt in October of the same year. The Borea hung up for another year before it was sold to a Canadian businessman who wanted to convert it into a luxury cruise ship. His plan was not implemented and the ship remained in Turku until January 1987. Eventually it was acquired by Rannikkolinjat , a Finnish company that later became known as Kristina Cruises . The new owner had the ship extensively rebuilt for its new use as the cruise ship Kristina Regina ; the steam engine was replaced by a diesel engine. Since 1988 cruises have been made with the Kristina Regina from Finland, initially mainly to destinations on the Gulf of Finland , later also in the Baltic Sea , the North Sea , the Mediterranean Sea and the West African coast.

Since the Kristina Regina did not meet the safety requirements of the SOLAS Convention in its 2010 version and the necessary adjustments were considered too expensive, Kristina Cruises replaced the ship with the newer and larger Kristina Katerina . The Kristina Regina was sold to the Oy S / S Borea Ab in Turku, a company with the purpose of "preparing ships that have a remarkable place in the maritime history of Finland for use in the fields of culture and tourism". After regaining its original name and paintwork, the Bore returned to Turku in October 2010, where it has been used as a hotel, restaurant and museum at the Forum Marinum marine museum since 2011 .
