MT6 , known as "Kurti" , was a wolf living in northern Germany . The animal attracted attention because of its not shy behavior. After attacking a dog, being around people seemed too dangerous; the wolf was officially released for shooting and shot on April 27, 2016 in the Heidekreis . The case was set as a precedent in dealing with wolves in Germany : It was the first targeted legal killing since the re-immigration of the animals.

Life

The male received the scientific identification "MT6" and was provided with a transmitter . The animal got its name in June 2015 when two wolves from the conspicuous pack in Munster received a transmitter collar. "M" stands for a male animal, "T" for telemetry. With the consecutive number 6 he was the sixth male animal with transmitters nationwide.

The Wolf MT6 came from the pack of the Munster military training area in the Heidekreis. The broadcasting made it possible to record his range of motion inside and outside the Munster and Bergen military training areas. The animal came closer to humans several times from mid-2015 to within a few meters. In mid-February 2016, MT6 is said to have followed a walker with a stroller and dog in Breloh (Heidekreis). In Groß Hehlen ( Celle district ) he had attacked a leashed dog and injured. Because of the transmitter collar, there was no doubt about the wolf's identity. An incident was also reported from Wardböhmen . The attempts to scare off by a Swedish expert failed because the wolf reacted by avoiding behavior and evasive widely.

The Lower Saxony Ministry of the Environment decided that the wolf posed a security risk. After that, the Ministry of the Environment originally wanted the animal to be brought to the Springe bison enclosure ( Hanover region ). In coordination with the wolf advice center at the federal level, however, the decision was made not to lock the wild-born male wolf in an enclosure . The potential rescue stations, the Wolf Center in Dörverden and the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park as well as the enclosure in Springe had spoken out against the accommodation of MT6. Locking a wild animal in an enclosure is animal cruelty , justified all zoos for their negative attitude.

death

After another encounter between MT6 and humans on the weekend of April 24th and 25th, 2016, the decision was made to kill the male wolf. At first it was thought to put him to sleep . Since the shooter of a tranquilizer dart has to approach an animal at least up to 30 meters in order to hit it safely, and the wolf had already evaded a large area during the scare-off attempts, this was not done. Therefore, Stefan Wenzel ( Greens ), the Environment Minister of Lower Saxony, commissioned a police sniper to shoot him down.

The dead wolf was brought to Berlin for examinations. The Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research was supposed to clarify, among other things, whether MT6 was sick. The reason for his lack of shyness was expressed by the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Environment, the assumption that MT6 may have been fed by humans as a young animal or had come into contact with humans. So he could have lost his fear of people, said Environment Minister Stefan Wenzel (Greens).

The carcass was prepared and was first exhibited in the NaturWelten of the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover , then also in Lüneburg, Emsland and Cuxhaven.

Reactions

The nature conservation associations IFAW , NABU and WWF declared in a joint statement on the shooting of the wolf that they regret the death of the animal, but also showed their understanding for the decision of the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Environment , because MT6's abnormal behavior poses a risk that can no longer be calculated People depicted.

“One may even speak of a certain historical decision in the German wolf management. It is important to honor and support the decision of Lower Saxony's Environment Minister Stefan Wenzel and State Secretary Almuth Kottwitz , ”said Frank Faß, Head of the Wolf Center Dörverden.

The causes of the behavior of MT6 could not be conclusively clarified. One year after the lethal removal, the NABU again points out that the authorities responsible for wolf management should educate the population intensively in order to avoid undesirable behavioral developments in wolves through intentional or unintentional feeding.
