Maarten Belzer

Maarten Belzer (born August 22, 1870 in Gorinchem , South Holland Province , † May 30, 1948 in The Hague ) was a Dutch lieutenant general in the army .

Life

After attending the high school in Gorinchem, Belzer completed military training at the military school in Haarlem and was promoted to lieutenant (Tweede luitenant) on October 13, 1892 . He was then used as an officer in the infantry troops (Wapen der Infantry) . After his promotion to Lieutenant (Eerste luitenant) on 5 December 1896, he was until 1898 the Royal Dutch East Indian Army ( Royal Netherlands East Indies Army ) by the Dutch East Indies added. After his return he found various uses in infantry units and attended the Royal Military Academy ( Koninklijke Militaire Academie ) in Breda from 1900 to 1901 .

Belzer was promoted to captain (Kapitein) on January 1, 1909 and later served between 1913 and 1919 as adjutant to the commander of the New Dutch Waterline (Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie) , a defensive line based on the inundation with headquarters in Utrecht . In this usage, he received on March 16, 1918 Major (Majoor) and was transferred after 1919 as an officer in the General Staff, where he on 16 November 1923, Lieutenant Colonel (Luitenant-kolonel) and on May 1, 1926 Colonel ( Kolonel) was promoted.

After his promotion to major general (Generaal-majoor) on May 1, 1928, Belzer was a member of the Supreme Military Court (Hoog Militair Gerechtshof) and promoted there on May 1, 1930 to Lieutenant General (Luitenant-generaal) . He held the post of member of the Supreme Military Court after the German armed forces marched in on May 10, 1940 until the Dutch armed forces surrendered on May 14, 1940. On May 15, 1942, he was taken prisoner by Germany , where he was until the end of the Second World War .
