action

The main themes of the plot are friendship and getting older. Four friends in their late thirties are confronted with extreme situations when they meet again on the holiday island of Mallorca, which put their friendship to the test. The miniseries is kept in a dark comic style and contains a variety of black humor elements.

1st season

Baxter, Rick, Woody and Quinn want to spend a few days together with their childhood friend Alvo on Mallorca . While his friends have fared rather badly in the meantime, Alvo is a successful businessman with his own villa. The reunion of the friends turns out to be wet and happy fun. After two days of excessive drinking and partying, Alvo persuades the four friends to steal a boat and leave it in an unknown location. Harmless fun, as Alvo assures you. On the tour he reveals that he has bequeathed the villa to the four. When the five return from their tour, a short man wearing a Tony Blair mask enters the room and shoots Alvo. Then he rubs the gun on Baxter, contaminating it with his DNA . Then he issues the warning not to go to the police because he is the police. He leaves the property with flashing lights and a siren.

The four friends decide to bury Alvo and pretend nothing has happened. The next day, however, the policewoman María appears and asks about Alvo's whereabouts. The four say that Alvo is on the mainland. Rick remembers forgetting his video camera on the boat, and the four of them set off to get it back. On the boat, however, they meet drug dealers who exchange a suitcase full of drugs that are on board for a suitcase with three million euros . The four decide to get a rental car and keep the money in the trunk. When they return to the villa, they notice that a dog has dug Alvo. In a panic, they decide to first store it in a freezer and then bring it to the boat. When Maria comes, the friends have to improvise. Woody chops off Alvo's feet and head to fit in the freezer. Just in time, because María begins to interrogate the four individually. At the end of the episode, she discovers Rick's video camera, which is on a shelf.

The next morning, María reappears and shows Baxter a photo of a murdered drug lord. Apparently a drug deal had broken and Alvo would be involved. Behind it all would be the Serbian Mafia . The four begin to argue what should happen next. After this argument, in which they accuse each other of the mistakes of their past, they decide to bring Alvo's dismembered body onto the boat and make everything look like a broken drug deal. However, on the way they lose a foot that a dog takes with them. After they put the rest of the body on the boat, Rick and Baxter start an argument that ends with Rick being left alone and the others going back to the mansion. There the short man awaits them, who takes the three prisoners and tortures them. However, Rick comes back and overwhelms the short stature. The four first tie him up and sink him into the empty well. Then they debate whether they should go to the police. Outside the police station, however, they decide not to trust the police. They plan their escape with the money and persuade Rick's vacation friend Lottie to bring the money to the villa the next day. When they return to spend the last night in the villa, they find the short man in the freezer with the note "We warned you to go to the police".

After the four have buried the man's body, they see a flare gun fire. They flee to the villa; then the electricity and water are turned off. The next morning, María appears and explains that the Serbian mafia is looking for them. She offers her protection, which her friends refuse. In the house there are further arguments about the past of the four. After a solid argument, Baxter evaluates the video tapes from the surveillance cameras and her own cameras and comes to the conclusion that there is no Serbian Mafia and that María is a corrupt police officer. The four decide to face the police and record a farewell video for their families. After Lottie has brought in the money, María is already waiting for her in the villa. Quinn can take her off, but is shot. He threatens his friends with a gun, gives each of them some money and is left alone in the villa while the others drive to the airport. As he is cleaning himself in the swimming pool, a policeman appears with a gun drawn.

production

Mad Dogs was announced by Sky1 in May 2010. Cris Cole wrote the screenplay and Left Bank Pictures ( Wallander , Strike Back ) produced it. The actors Philip Glenister and Max Beesley were instrumental in creating the series. Both British Broadcasting Corporation and ITV had expressed an interest in the series, but Beesley and Glenister wanted the freedom that a pay-TV broadcaster gives them. Filming began in May 2010 on original locations in Sóller , Pollença and Palma on Mallorca. The director took Adrian Shergold . The series budget was three million euros. The Mallorcan Turism Foundation made 150,000 of them available. On January 12, 2011, three 30-second promos were aired for the first time, which have nothing to do with the actual plot, but should show the humor of the series. These were created by director David LaChapelle .

A second season was broadcast in the UK in early 2012. The third season will be broadcast in June 2013. It was also announced that the series should end with a two-part fourth season. In addition, there are talks about a possible spin-off with the title Mad Cats , which will then have an all-female main cast.
