The Mad Monks are a German ska - punk formation from Bremen , founded in December 2004. The style of the 4-piece band is predominantly in the ska-punk area, but also has strong influences from pop , rock , reggae and metal and swing . The band is still active after the trumpeter Lasse Timm left in December 2014.

history

In 2004 the four-piece combo Mad Monks was born in Bremen from a previous band project called Fake , consisting of drummer Sven Krumme and guitarist Daniel Brinkmann (Daily Grind). Bassist Dennis Lackmann (previously active with Sorrowfield and Soulpotion) and trumpeter Lasse Timm did not complete the band until 2004. In 2005 the line-up was expanded to include trombonist Matthias Streich (previously Practical Joke, Marshall Brave Ska). After the first successes, the band's popularity began to rise steadily. In 2004 the first EP was released with the title We kick ass for the Lord and was completed in 2006 with the first long player entitled Welcome to Mad Monk Abbey . Since then, the Mad Monks have consistently advocated a “free download” of their music. Since 2006, the band has achieved a high level of awareness nationwide and across Germany on a subcultural level. The Mad Monks have a solid fan base, especially in northern Germany. In 2006 the band toured across Germany with the Russian ska-punk combo Distemper , the French jazz-funk combo Skannibal Schmitt and Jan featuring the USSR. In 2009 the second long player was released, entitled Flying Circus , on which many guest musicians can be heard such as B. the former singer of the Bremen hard rock combo President Evil (band) . Since then, the stand-alone single Fleisch and an EP with the title 5 to twelve have been released , as well as numerous contributions for various samplers. Among other things, the Mad Monks contributed a version of the Werder Bremen song Das W auf dem Trikot in 2007 for the Werder Bremen club sampler, which appears regularly. Since the albums were released via the “Free Download” (2006), the Mad Monks have recorded well over 30,000 downloads, and the band can now also be heard on all streaming portals. Since the band was founded, she has shared the stage with bands such as The Busters , Slime , Distemper, Reel Big Fish , Mr. Review or the Beatsteaks and played at countless festivals. All sound carriers were recorded in the Krumme Klänge recording studio in Bremen. A new long player called "BOOM" was released on December 19th, 2015. In an interview in spring 2016, the band announced that they were working on a new album, but this time they want to pursue the concept of recording a song immediately after it has been completed. Only then should the next piece be written. The Mad Monks have also supported various bands such as Slime, Velvetone or Die Mimmi’s with their brass section, the "Fat Honks", or worked on song projects. The Mad Monks have always been very critical of ties to an official music label. Apart from a close cooperation with the no longer existing Berlin label ANR - Music and More , the album "Flying Circus", released in 2009, was successfully distributed for several years by the independent distributor Brokensilence . This attitude corresponds to a DIY and hobby idea of the band. The Mad Monks are one of the most famous ska-punk bands in Germany on a subcultural level. Although the Mad Monks have often clearly campaigned for left-wing political issues, they describe themselves as an apolitical band that can only be used for political motives in exceptional cases.

The band is well known throughout Germany, but mainly in northern Germany. In addition, the band is known worldwide and in 2018 reached number 39 in the Russian iTunes Alternative Album Charts with their album "Welcome to Mad Monks Abbey" (2006). With the album "Flying Circus" (2009) the band landed at number 40 on the iTunes Alternative Album Charts. Otherwise, the band has also become known in the USA.

style

The Mad Monks cannot be reduced to the Ska-Punk genre. Influences from various styles such as pop, rock, metal, swing or folk can be seen in their repertoire. Although the song language is predominantly English, the Mad Monks have increasingly published German-language songs, especially in recent years. In terms of content, the lyrics are both political and trivial. The band likes to list bands such as Die Ärzte , NOFX , Mad Caddies , System of a Down , Mr. Review or Iron Maiden as musical role models .
