F4 Fake is a jazz album by Made to Break , led by Ken Vandermark . The recordings, which were made on November 29, 2017 in the Primitive Studios in Vienna after completing a short European tour, were released in October 2019 on the Austrian label Trost Records .

background

The jazz quartet Made to Break has been led by woodwind player Ken Vandermark since 2011. Members are Christof Kurzmann (electronics), Jasper Stadhouders (e-bass) and Tim Daisy (drums). The band's debut album, Lacerba , was released in 2013 on Clean Feed Records . The line-up has remained stable for most of the band's existence. This formation, his Ensemble Marker as well as his quintet Vandermark 5 , which existed from 1996 to 2010, are considered "the main drivers for the pioneering composer", wrote Mark Corroto.

Like practically all of Vandermark's compositions, the tracks on the album are dedicated to artists. "Aaton" is dedicated to Orson Welles , the director of the 1973 film F for Fake . The piece begins with a “ funky groove ” that soon breaks up and falls “into a sea of electronic noises” by Kurzmann. Vandermark switched from the tenor saxophone to the clarinet and Stadhouders from the vibraphone to the guitar, which he worked on with "wild devotion". Then the piece seems to be heading for a roaring climax with a scratchy tenor and a sinister bass line, which is just a distraction . The last three minutes end in Kurzmann's sound imitation of a calm mood.

The second title, "Meccano Number 7", is dedicated to the Argentine writer Julio Cortázar , and "Agora" to the Brazilian singer Zelia Barbosa . "Agora" is the most radical track on the album, Shanley noted, which is largely due to Jasper Stadhouder's playing; his guitar work ranges from amateurish strumming to advanced advanced technique, which is underlined by his effects pedals. The urgent, raging character of the play best captures the anger and dismay at the disastrous policies of current Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro , who, like his American colleague and role model, relies on fake news to justify his idiotic actions, wrote Eyal Hareuveni.

reception

According to Mark Corroto, who reviewed the album on All About Jazz , Made to Break has a freshness that resembles the electrically amplified music of Miles Davis from the 1970s. Like Davis, Vandermark also works outside the path of jazz, including funk, electronics, Ethiopian aesthetics and contemporary classical music. And like Miles, he was an artist of his time who was inspired by painters, writers, film directors and the DIY rock that he heard.

Mike Shanley wrote in JazzTimes that although F4 Fake only consists of three tracks, the album seems to contain at least twice as many compositions, as the quartet Made to Break often changes the mood, mostly with little or no transition. “Funky vamps go as fast as they start. The chaos suddenly shifts into composed passages. False conclusions serve as a gateway to peaceful codas . "

Made to Break combine fiery free jazz with raw noises and abstract electronics, wrote Eyal Hareuveni in the Free Jazz Blog. "Everything together results in a possessive interplay that is sensual and extreme in its own way, but highlights Made to Break at its best." Made to Break is Ken Vandermark's most fertile and active ensemble in the last decade.
