Madonna, you are more beautiful than the sunshine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Madonna, you are more beautiful than the sunshine is the reverse verse and the title of a slow-paced song that Robert Katscher composed and also wrote in 1924 for the revueKisses at Midnight ”. The equipment revue from the pen of Katscher and Karl Farkas , in which u. a. also Eugen Jensen and Gerda Maurus participated, was in the 1924 Vienna Chamber play premiered.

Characteristics

Katscher wrote the song in B flat major and in the song form ABA'C. IT is a slow ballad in the Viennese operetta tradition; the A parts consist of repeated, slowly descending notes, the climax (in G major) is reached in the C part. Despite the original name "Lied ( Serenade ) and Blues", it is not a blues because of the formal structure .

The text sets the action in Italy, probably in Venice because of the small gondola , where a gondolier serenades the verses to an unknown Signorina at the evening hour from a distance from his watercraft. He praises the beauty of the beloved, which he compares with the beauties of nature, especially that of the sunshine. At the moment of the fulfillment for which he pleads, he and the sung would become one for him. The modern, more transatlantic-oriented form of “song and blues ” contrasts strangely with this romantic-European scene , but is not understood as blues singing, as the African-Americans do, but as a continental fashion dance.

Madonna, you are more beautiful than the sunshine was published by Bohème-Verlag in Vienna in 1924.

Reception history

The song was performed by the chansonnier Engelbert Milde (Homocord 1780), the tenors Max Kuttner (Grammophon 20 278) and Richard Tauber (Odeon O-8100) and the soubrette Franzi Ressel, the orchestras Dajos Béla (Odeon A 44646, here as' Sándor Józsi '), Bernard Etté (Vox 01947) and Paul Godwin (gramophone 19 378 and Polyphon 31 579, here as' Joan Florescu') recorded on gramophone records.

With the English text When Day Is Done , written by the songwriter Buddy G. de Sylva , the song was also a success overseas, where it made known the orchestra of Paul Whiteman , and soon afterwards a world hit and evergreen .

In Germany, the title Madonna was still popular after the Second World War and was included in their repertoire by large entertainment orchestras. James Last played the song in 1964 on his LP "Das gabs only once, Episode 2", and Helmut Zacharias on his 2001 album "Zauberklang der Violin". Gerhard Wendland sang it in 1963 on his LP album “Zärtliche Musik mit Gerhard Wendland”, Max Raabe performed it in 1991 to accompany the Palast Orchester on his CD “I like to hear music”.
