Mafalda Salvatini (born October 17, 1886 in Baia , † June 13, 1971 in Lugano ) was an Italian opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Mafalda Salvatini was the daughter of an officer in the Neapolitan army. Orphaned at the age of four, she went to boarding schools in Portici and Paris . Her musical talent was shown at an early age and so she received vocal training from Pauline Viardot-Garcia and Jean de Reszke . Later she studied in Germany with Julius Lieban .

Salvatini made her debut at the Berlin State Opera in 1908 in the title role of Verdi's Aida with Enrico Caruso , who allegedly carried her on stage at the end so that she would receive her applause. She stayed at this theater until 1914 and sang Leonora in Verdi's Il trovatore and the title role in Puccini's Madama Butterfly . In 1912 she gave a guest appearance at the Bavarian State Opera and in 1913 she made her debut at the Paris Opera as Valentine in Meyerbeer's Die Huguenots .

From 1914 to 1923 Salvatini was one of the singers at the German Opera House . She sang Amelia in Verdi's masked ball , Marta in d'Albert's lowlands , Myrtocle in his Die toten Augen , Rachel in Halévy's La juive , Santuzza in Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana , Senta in the Flying Dutchman , the title role in Carmen and Puccinis Tosca .

From 1924 to 1926 she was again at the Berlin State Opera, where she was heard in the title role of Puccini's Turandot , whose Berlin premiere took place in 1926 under the direction of Bruno Walter . She then returned to the Deutsche Oper and stayed there until her retirement in 1932.

Outside Berlin, Salvatini made guest appearances at the Vienna State Opera in 1922 and 1928 . She appeared in the Semperoper in Dresden in 1927 and 1928 and had appearances at the opera house in Riga . She also gave guest appearances in Holland and Belgium.

When Mafalda Salvatini came to Berlin in 1908, she married Walter Gérard, a Berlin researcher and entrepreneur of Huguenot origin , with whom she had two sons: Rolf Gérard (1909–2011) and Charles E. (called Horst) Gérard (1912–2007). Her grandson Alexander Gérard , architect and real estate project developer, initiated the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg together with his wife, the art historian Jana Marko .

In 1933 Salvatini married the Lithuanian ambassador in Berlin Jurgis Šaulys (1879–1948). When the Second World War broke out , they went to Lugano in Switzerland, where Mafalda Salvatini died in 1971 at the age of 84.
