Rolf Gérard
Rolf Gérard (born August 9, 1909 in Berlin ; † November 19, 2011 in Ascona ) was a British set designer and painter of German origin.
Life
Rolf Gérard was the son of Walter Gérard, who came from a Huguenot family and who was responsible for producing the “Dr. Walter Gerard Zielfernrohrs “ran a successful company in Charlottenburg , and the Italian opera singer Mafalda Salvatini (1886–1971). Gérard studied medicine and philosophy, he was in a relationship with the actress Lilli Palmer in the early 1930s . After the National Socialists came to power, he had to emigrate from Germany to France in 1933. In 1937 he received his doctorate in medicine from the University of Basel . During the Second World War he was able to work as a doctor in Great Britain , he later also received British citizenship. In London he deepened his artistic interest and came into contact with the director Peter Brook , with whom he worked for many years, first in 1947 in his staging of Romeo and Juliet in Stratford-upon-Avon . From the great British and US American theaters he received commissions for the set, costumes and equipment, for over twenty years from the Metropolitan Opera in New York . There, and then at the Geneva Opera , he also worked with Herbert Graf . He has worked as a set designer for Gene Kelly , Joseph L. Mankiewicz , Victor Saville , Tyrone Guthrie and Arthur Maria Rabenalt .
Gérard exhibited his own painting first in London in 1939 and then regularly in New York and Paris from the 1950s. Since 1977 he lived in Ascona, Switzerland. He also began to exhibit his pictures in Ascona. To do this, he bought a house there and in 2006 founded the “Fondazione Rolf Gérard” in it. The foundation is open to the general public and works by Gérard are shown there. There are often special exhibitions. In summer 2013 it was the exhibition “Oskar Koroschka visits Rold Gérard”.
In France, Gérard was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1971 .
