Magda Roos
Magda Roos (born April 29, 1920 in Cuxhaven , † July 16, 1976 in Cuxhaven) was a German painter.
biography
Magda Roos was the youngest daughter of a Rhineland businessman and a woman from Cuxhaven. She graduated from elementary school and the Cuxhaven girls' grammar school. In 1937 she studied at the Hanseatic University of Fine Arts in Hamburg-Uhlenhorst . There she learned the different drawing and painting techniques, including those of bygone eras. At the end of her studies, she went to Munich to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in the early 1940s .
Academic teachers were u. a. Paul Bollmann , Willy Habl, Hugo Meier-Thur , Rudolf Neugebauer, Werner Kloos and Eduard Steinbach .
During her service as a technical draftsman at BMW in Munich, she met the scientist and engineer Richard Modlinger , whom she married in 1944; both had the son Andreas. After her divorce in 1958, she lived in Hamburg and then again in Cuxhaven on Schillerstrasse . 1968–1969 she designed the column "Citizen Cux means ...", which appeared in the Cuxhaven newspaper. This personification, which has long been discussed in her family, was also the starting point for the well-known Cuxhaven mascot JAN CUX , which was given the shape it has known since then in 1972. The first drafts of her brother-in-law, the graphic artist Kurt Moldenhauer, were created in the early 1950s based on ideas they shared with Magda Roos. As a homage to her hometown, she wrote the Cuxhaven Stories in 1970 ; the biography "FELOMA" included the stations of her youth - no further stories have been published yet.

Quote from Magda Roos - Portrait of an Artist , 1997 by the art historian Anja Schmidt (now Anja Römisch): “ Magda Roos is an artist of that era who, it can be said, was wrongly almost forgotten. Her pictures are characterized by a special and very own dynamic as well as a very personal, unmistakable style that appears to be remarkable. Far away from the art centers, in the 50s and 60s she developed an image form that remained unaffected by the trends of those years and that is still able to cast a spell on the viewer today. "
