Magdaléna Dobromila Rettigová
Magdalena Dobromila Rettigová (born January 31, 1785 in Všeradice , Bohemia , † August 5, 1845 in Litomyšl ) was a Bohemian- Czech writer and representative of the Czech national movement.
Life
The daughter of the Burgrave of Všeradice , Franz Artmann, had several siblings who, however, died early. So she grew up under the care of her mother, who taught her to read and write until she was five. The friend of the house, Eugenicus Frank, once educator at Count von Kaunitz , also imparted a deep faith to her and made her write prayer books for young girls. Magdalena's life, which was quiet but also lonely, was interrupted by the death of her father in 1792. Her mother was forced to move to Pilsen , and the ten-year-old girl attended school for the first time. She was an avid reader, wrote down stories from her classmates, some of whom came from the country, and was particularly interested in Bible stories.
After another move to Prague , her cultural interest deepened. She attended the theater and began to write dramas herself.
Until she was 18, she only spoke German. It was only after her marriage to the Czech patriot and lawyer Jan Sudiprav Rettig in 1808 that she was taught the Czech language by him. He also introduced them to the circles of the Czech national movement . They lived in Litomysl and she organized social evenings and cultural events there for the movement. In contrast to other women, she did not try to enforce emancipation, but taught the young girls household skills.
The last phase of her life is marked by an accident. She broke her hand and could no longer use it. A difficult lot for a woman who was devoted to her husband, who ran the house and who loved to cook. A year after her husband died, she too died.
In 2010 she was honored in the Czech Republic with the issue of a stamp dedicated to her.
