Magere Zeiten - The movie with the pig (Original title: A Private Function ) is a British feature film from 1984 . Directed by Malcolm Mowbray .

action

In a town in the north of England in 1947, some business people want to hold a ceremony to mark the wedding of Prince Philip and Princess Elizabeth II, but food is still rationed after the war. Therefore, they illegally bring a pig they have fattened to the venue. When the poor podiatrist Gilbert Chilvers finds out, his wife Joyce incites him to steal the pig, as she hopes that this will give her more social standing. To solve the case, a food inspector is sent into town, but he does not notice the hidden pig because of its lack of smell . Joyce urges her husband to slaughter the animal, but he does not have the heart and finally the businessmen turn up in Gilbert's apartment. Due to some misunderstandings with Joyce's old mother, the couple learns that the planned slaughter of pigs is illegal and can blackmail the businessmen into being allowed to attend the party - this is how Joyce finds her connection to high society. The film ends with Gilbert and a soft-hearted businessman getting a new piglet.

production

Three different pigs were used for filming. It was Malcolm Mowbray's directorial debut. The film was shot in 1984 and premiered in England in November of the same year.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films saw a “comedy that caricatures petty-bourgeois dream worlds in a mixture of dry English joke and evil, caustic humor” and thereby provides “enjoyable, turbulent 'black' entertainment”.

Prisma said that "directorial debutant Malcolm Mowbray [...] with this authentic story about the poor post-war years, in which an undeclared pig caused all kinds of confusion in a village, was a wonderful mixture of English humor and bitter black comedy [succeeded]". Also noteworthy are "the many details on the fringes" that offer "royal entertainment".
