The Maharaj Trio is an instrumental trio of classical Indian music in the line-up of sarod , sitar and tablas . The three musicians, father and two sons, come from a north Indian family of musicians in Varanasi , whose oral tradition goes back around 500 years.

The trio plays as Jugalbandi (translated: entwined twins ), a trio that has been in use since the middle of the twentieth century, in which the melodic improvisation is performed by two mutually reactive soloists of equal standing. Jugalbaldi was best known in Europe through the performances of the sitarist Ravi Shankar with the sarod player Ali Akbar Khan .
