The Mahle GmbH (proper spelling: MAHLE GmbH ) is an automotive supplier based in Stuttgart . Mahle is one of the 20 largest automotive suppliers in the world and a development partner for the automotive and engine industries . As a manufacturer of components and systems for the combustion engine and its peripherals, Mahle is one of the three largest system suppliers of pistons , cylinders and valve controls (valve trains).

As of December 31, 2019, Mahle employed around 77,000 people worldwide at around 160 production sites and in 16 research and development centers.

history

In 1920 the engineer Hellmuth Hirth and others founded a small workshop in the Cannstatt district of Stuttgart , where he developed and built two-stroke engines . On December 1, 1920, the 26-year-old businessman Hermann Mahle joined Hellmuth Hirth's company as the seventh employee, which was now called "Versuchsbau Hellmuth Hirth". This December 1st, 1920 is considered to be the birthday of today's Mahle Group.

It became clear relatively quickly that the workshop could not keep afloat in the long run just with engine tests. The aim was to establish a profitable branch of production that made it possible to continue the engine tests. At that time, pistons made of gray cast iron were mainly used in automobile production; the idea of replacing them with pistons made of light metal came up. On November 1, 1922, Hermann Mahle's brother, the engineer Ernst Mahle, joined the company as technical manager at the age of 26. In 1924 the name was changed to Elektronmetall GmbH. In 1927 the company developed the first control piston in Germany, and in 1931 the world's first aluminum ring carrier piston for diesel engines. In the period that followed, piston technology was further improved.

The Mahle logo was introduced in 1938 when the company was also renamed Mahle KG . As one of the largest suppliers of engine and aircraft components, Mahle became part of arms production. Forced laborers were also used during World War II. In 2001 the company therefore paid DM 3 million into the foundation initiative of the German economy and in 2004 handed over an index to the International Tracing Service Bad Arolsen. The company continued to develop and new products were invented and produced (e.g. aluminum cylinders with Cromal tread 1951). In 1964 the company founders Hermann and Ernst Mahle decided to transfer their ownership of the company to a non-profit foundation. They renounced most of their personal property and transferred their company shares to the Mahle Foundation GmbH .

From 1971 onwards one took part in Knecht Filterwerke GmbH , also in Cannstatt, which was completely taken over in 1993. In 1976 Mahle launched the first European aluminum engine blocks made from a hypereutectic alloy . In 1988 the so-called built camshaft was developed to the point of series production and in 2001 a new cooling concept for pistons in high-revving passenger car diesel engines was presented. The first all-plastic oil filter worldwide followed in 2003. In the same year Mahle developed and built its first complete engine; this was used in the Formula Student . The acquisition of Cosworth Technology Ltd. followed in 2005 . with offices in UK and USA - now Mahle Powertrain Ltd . as well as the complete takeover of Brockhaus Soehne GmbH, Germany - then Mahle Brockhaus GmbH . This was sold to the Frauenthal Group in April 2017. In October 2009, the acquisition of the automotive business in Mattighofen / Upper Austria was agreed with 'KTM Kühler GmbH'. In 2010 Mahle acquired 60% of Behr Industry and 19.9% of the shares in Mahle Behr GmbH & Co. KG.

In 2012 Mahle took over InnoWa Membrane based in Schwaikheim . In 2013 Mahle increased its stake in Mahle Behr GmbH & Co. KG from 36.85 percent to around 51 percent. In January 2014 Mahle acquired all shares in the Indian piston joint venture Mahle IPL Limited and in the same year also the majority in the Slovenian electric motor manufacturer Letrika with 2,400 employees, 243 million euros in sales and seven locations in Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Belarus and China and Brazil.

In February 2015, Mahle took over Delphi Thermal and, following the takeover of Behr, expanded its expertise in thermal management for automobiles. In October 2015 it was announced that the industrial filter division would be sold by mid-2016 and that at least 170 jobs would be cut. At the end of 2016, Mahle sold the division to the Filtration Group Corporation . In January it was announced that Bosch and Mahle were planning to sell the joint BMTS turbocharger business. In May 2017 Mahle took over the Spanish electronics specialist Nagares based in Motilla del Palancar

In June 2018 Mahle took over the Italian manufacturer BrainBee. With this, Mahle is expanding its product range and competencies in the field of vehicle diagnostics as well as transmission service stations, exhaust gas stations and air conditioning service units.

In May 2019, it became known that Mahle will be cutting around 380 of the 4,300 jobs in the Stuttgart area by the end of 2020 in indirect areas, i.e. not in production. The planning for an extension of the headquarters in Bad Cannstatt for 1,300 employees on an adjacent property that had already been acquired was postponed until further notice.

In 2020 Mahle celebrates its 100th company anniversary.
