Mahonia × media is a plant from the family of Barberry (Berberidaceae). It is an artificial hybrid of the parent species Japanese Oregon grape ( Mahonia japonica ) and Lomaria-leaved Oregon grape ( Mahonia lomariifolia ).

Mahonia × media is an upright, evergreen shrub up to 4 meters high in areas with mild winters with strong and sparsely branched branches. The leaves are up to 60 centimeters long and consist of 17 to 21 leaflets. These are ovate-lanceolate in shape, glossy dark green on the top, yellow-green on the underside, have clear leaf veins and have 5 to 11 teeth on each side. The flowers are light yellow to lemon yellow and are loosely in up to 35 centimeters long terminal clusters. The flowers open in late autumn and early winter. This species is hardy.
Use and cultivation forms
Mahonia × media is rarely used as an ornamental shrub in gardens and parks; different types are known:
- 'Arthur Menzies'
- 'Buckland' with overhanging grapes
- 'Charity' with light yellow flowers in upright, later splayed clusters.
- 'Lionel Fortescue'
- 'Winter Sun' is low; this variety later blooms as 'Charity'.
