The Kamchatka honeysuckle ( Lonicera caerulea var. Kamtschatica Sevast. , Syn .: Lonicera kamtschatica (Sevast.) Pojark. ), Also called Siberian blueberry , honeyberry or gimolost , is a variety of the plant species Blue Honeysuckle ( Lonicera caerulea ) from the genus Heckenkirschenirschen ( Lonicera ) within the honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae). Their distribution area is in Siberia , on Kamchatka and on the Kuriles . A registered word mark for individual varieties of Häberli Frucht Pflanzen AG is "Maibeere".

Fruits of the Kamchatka honeysuckle

The Kamchatka honeysuckle grows as a richly branched, deciduous shrub and reaches heights of 1 to 2, rarely up to 2.5 meters. The bark of young twigs is green and turns reddish brown in summer. They are covered with downward hair. The leaves are elliptical, oblong-elliptical or obovate with a length of 4 to 10 centimeters. The leaf surface is velvety at first, clearly hairy over the summer and the leaf edge is ciliate.

The short-stalked flowers are in pairs in the leaf axils. The flowers are zygomorphic . The yellowish to greenish-yellow corolla is 1.1 to 1.6 centimeters long and tubular-bell-shaped. The stamens rise above the crown. The fruits, which are black-blue and light-blue when ripe, have a length of 0.8 to 3.1 centimeters and are irregularly cylindrical, egg or pear-shaped. They ripen in May and June and are edible and tasty.

Occurrence

The plant is found in Siberia , Kamchatka and the Kuriles . There you can find them in mountain forests and in alpine areas. It prefers fresh to moist, acidic to neutral, sandy-humic, gravelly or rocky, shallow soils. It is frost-hardy and thrives in cold winter and cool summer climates in sunny to light-shaded locations.

It was first published in 1818 under the name Lonicera caerulea var. Kamtschatica by AF Sevastianov in Krashen. Opican. Zemli Kamch. , 1, p. 311. The valid scientific name is Lonicera caerulea var. Kamtschatica Sevast. , a variety of the blue honeysuckle ( Lonicera caerulea L. ). A synonym of Lonicera caerulea var. Kamtschatica Sevast. is Lonicera kamtschatica (Sevast.) Pojark.

use

The Kamchatka honeysuckle is rarely cultivated for fruit production, but mainly the varieties 'Maistar' and 'Mailon' are used for cultivation. The juicy-sweet fruits can be consumed fresh or processed into jams, compotes, purees and juice. It is also used as an ornamental shrub because of its decorative flowers and remarkable fruits .
