Mainacht (alternative title: Die Mainacht ; original title: russisch Майская ночь, или Утопленница , Maiskaja notsch, ili Utoplenniza ) is a Soviet fairy tale film by Alexander Rou from 1952, which follows the story Mainacht or Die Drowned by Nikolai Gogolene .

The young Cossack Levko meets secretly with the Cossack daughter Hanna because her father refuses to marry the two lovers. While walking you will come across a mansion that stands by a deep pond. Lewko tells Hanna that a widowed father once lived there with his daughter Pannotschka and that when the father married a new wife, she turned out to be a cruel witch towards the daughter, which led to Pannotschka feeling grief-stricken plunged deep pond.
Later Lewko goes alone to the pond, where he takes a nap. In a dream he meets Pannotschka, who tells him that after her death, unrecognizable to Pannotschka, her wicked stepmother mingled with the drowned girls of the pond who were the same and continued to torment them. Levko helps her to recognize the witch, whereby Pannotschka is redeemed. As a thank you, when he wakes up, he holds an imperial letter in his hands ordering his marriage to Hanna.

May Night was released in Soviet cinemas on October 31, 1952 . The film was released in GDR cinemas on June 19, 1953.
