The Main Bridge Marktbreit is a 928 m long bridge on Autobahn 7 .

The structure is located between the Kitzingen and Marktbreit motorway junctions at 223 m above sea level and thus represents the lowest point of the Würzburg - Ulm section . It spans the Main south of Kitzingen at a maximum height of 60 m with eleven fields at river kilometer 275.96, left Main the Treuchtlingen – Würzburg railway line and the 2418 state road from Ochsenfurt to Marktbreit as well as the 2270 state road to the right of the Main from Frickenhausen to Segnitz and a 20 kV overhead line .

In the course of the bridge, the motorway has a clothoid with a connecting straight line. In the elevation there is a rounded tub, the longitudinal slope is approximately 4%. The overpass was built with two separate superstructures for the directional carriageways between 1977 and 1981 at a cost of around DM 55 million.

Foundation and substructures

The abutments and the pillars are either deeply founded on bored piles or driven piles, or in some cases they are also shallow . The piers have a rectangular hollow cross-section with external dimensions at the pier head of 7.0 m × 3.1 m.

Superstructures

The two adjacent superstructures of the prestressed concrete bridge are continuous girders with a single-cell hollow box cross-section. The construction height at the Würzburg abutment is 3.42 m and at the Ulm abutment 4.60 m and increases linearly towards the middle of the bridge with the main spans to 5.33 m. The prestressing consists of internal tendons in the longitudinal and transverse directions .

The span for the 11-span bridge is 37.0 m - 52.0 m - 81.0 m - 86.0 m - 2x90.0 m - 91.0 m - 108.6 m - 107.4 m - 95 .0 m - 90.0 m.

execution

The bridge was built using the incremental launching method in 33 cycles per superstructure with a maximum cycle length of 22.8 m, with this being carried out in two sections from both abutments. Because of the large spans, auxiliary piers were necessary in the middle of the field. These were steel lattice towers braced at an angle.

During the construction period, the construction company had to file for bankruptcy. The incremental launching procedure was subsequently interrupted for a long period of time. The company that continued construction then changed the post-tensioning system and the geometry of the unfinished bridge.

New building

The existing Main Bridge from 1982 is in a poor structural condition. Heavy goods traffic weighing over 42 tons is no longer allowed to use it. There is also a ban on overtaking for trucks. Since renovation is no longer possible, the bridge is to be replaced by a new building. The first place in a design competition in 2019 for the new replacement building was a girder bridge as a single-cell, haunched steel composite structure that spans the Main Valley with six fields and spans of 110 m to 200 m.
