Maksym Slavynskyi
Maksym Antonowytsch Slawynskyj ( Ukrainian Максим Антонович Славинський ; born August 12 . Jul / 24. August 1868 greg. In Stavyshche , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 23. November 1945 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian writer, poet, translator , Diplomat and politician.
Life
Maksym Slawynskyj graduated from the Second Kyiv Gymnasium and studied law and history and philology at the University of Kiev between 1887 and 1891 . He then moved to he lived in Yekaterinoslav and worked for a newspaper. During his student years he was a member of the Kiev literary club "Pleyada", where together with Lesja Ukrajinka translated Heinrich Heine's " Book of Songs " and published it in 1892. From 1898 on he lived in Saint Petersburg , where he worked as a lawyer and was initially co-editor of a progressive newspaper and from 1906 editor of Ukrainskii vestnik (Ukrainian Herald) and between 1909 and 1917 of Vestnik Evropy (European Journal). In Saint Petersburg he became a member of the Ukrainian Radical Democratic Party (from 1917 Ukrainian Party of Socialist Federalists ) and at the end of March 1917 he became a representative of the Central Rada to the provisional Russian government in Saint Petersburg.
In 1918 he went back to Ukraine and in May 1918 became a member of the Council of the Foreign Ministry in the " Ukrainian State " and was temporarily ambassador of Ukraine in the Don region and between May and June 1918 negotiator in negotiations with the Soviet Union . In the second government of Fedir Lysohub , he was the labor minister . In 1919 he headed the diplomatic mission of the Ukrainian People's Republic in the Czechoslovak Republic in Prague . There he lectured from 1923 at the Ukrainian higher pedagogical institute named after Dragomanow on the history of Western European literature and was professor of modern history at the Ukrainian Business Academy in Poděbrady . He was also still politically active and worked with the government-in-exile of the Ukrainian People's Republic.
In 1945 he was arrested by the Soviet anti-shield service " SMERSH " in Prague and imprisoned in Lukjaniwska prison in Kiev, where he died that same year at the age of 77.

Maksym Slawynskyj was the author of prose and numerous historical, literary and journalistic articles as well as articles on the national and European question. In 1947 he wrote a textbook on the history of Ukraine. In addition to Heine, Slawynskyj also translated works by Goethe , Anatole France , Romain Rolland , Adam Mickiewicz and Bolesław Prus . In the 1950s, his memoirs were published in Philadelphia .
