Mamiko Watanabe

Mamiko Watanabe ( Japanese 渡 辺 麻美 子 Watanabe Mamiko , born September 26, 1980 in Fukuoka ) is a Japanese jazz musician ( piano , composition ) of modern jazz .

Watanabe began playing the piano when she was four years old when she attended Yamaha Music School; In 1999 she received a scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music ; there she studied jazz piano , improvisation and composition. In 2002 and 2003 she was a semi-finalist in the Solo Piano Competition held as part of the Montreux Jazz Festival . During her studies she also played with Joe Lovano , Kevin Mahogany , Bobby McFerrin , Tiger Okoshi and Phil Wilson . In 2003 she received the Down Beat Student Award in the Jazz Soloist category. She then lived in New York, where she performed in clubs like the Blue Note , Iridium , Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola , Fat Cat, and the Lenox Lounge .

Watanabe released her debut album One After Another under her own name in 2005 , followed by Origin / Jewel (2007), a double album in both funk and Latin idioms as well as straight-ahead jazz with her piano trio. Her third album, Mother Earth (2010), received positive reviews in magazines such as Jazz Inside, New York City Jazz Record and Jazziz . Currently (2018/19) she is a member of the Valery Ponomarev Big Band and his septet; she also leads her own formation. In the field of jazz, she was involved in nine recording sessions between 2006 and 2017.
