Mammillaria magnimamma is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet magnimamma means 'with large warts'.

description

Mammillaria magnimamma , grows spherical, a little pressed later often obovate. The gray to blue-green bodies often divide and form larger groups. The warts are large, broad, very depressed, ovoid and dull and dark green and contain milky sap . The axillae are woolly; especially when they are young with white wool. The 2 to 5 radial spines are extremely variable, of unequal length and whitish to yellow with dark tips. They become 1.5 to 4.5 centimeters long, the lower ones often stand downwards. Central spines are usually absent.

The relatively small, only 2 to 2.5 centimeters large flowers are cream-colored to pink or purple-pink. The fruits are clearly dark red. The seeds are brown.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria magnimamma is distributed with large populations in the Mexican states of Hidalgo , Guerrero , Mexico , Aguascalientes , Zacatecas , Querétaro , Guanajuato , Tamaulipas , Nuevo León and San Luis Potosí and occurs at altitudes between 100 and 2700 meters.

It was first described in 1824 by Adrian Hardy Haworth .
