description

Vegetative characteristics

The Manchurian pipe bush is a shrub and reaches heights of growth of 1 to 3 meters. It has overhanging branches. The peeling bark is maroon or gray-brown. Twigs carrying flowers are sparsely hairy, long shoots glabrous or almost glabrous.

The opposite arranged leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is 3 to 8 millimeters long. The simple leaf blade is egg-shaped or elongated-lanceolate with a length of 3 to 11 centimeters and a width of 2 to 6 centimeters with a broad wedge-shaped or rounded blade base, pointed upper end and serrated or almost entire leaf margin. The upper side of the leaf is glabrous, the underside can be sparsely hairy on the veins. Five pairs of nerves are usually clearly recognizable on the leaf blade.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from June to July. Three to seven rarely up to nine flowers stand in a racemose inflorescence with a 3 to 5 centimeter long, sparsely hairy spindle. The flower stalk is 3 to 10 inches long.

The hermaphroditic flowers, which are not scented or only slightly scented, are radial symmetry with a double flower envelope . The calyx is hairy only at the base, yellowish green and has egg-shaped, 5 millimeter long sepals. The corolla has a diameter of 2.5 to 3 centimeters. The white petals are oblong, obovate, with a length of 1 to 1.5 centimeters and a width of 0.6 to 1.3 centimeters. The 20 to 30 stamens reach a length of up to 1 centimeter. The discus is bare. The stylus is grown bald and to about the middle.

The capsule fruits are inverted-conical with a length of 4 to 6 millimeters and a diameter of 4 to 5 millimeters. The seeds are 2.5 to 3 millimeters in size. The kind fruits ripen from August to September.

Occurrence

The natural range is in the temperate areas of Asia in the Russian regions of Khabarovsk and Primorye , in the Chinese provinces of Heilongjiang and Jilin , in Korea and Japan. The Manchurian pipe bush thrives in China in thickets at altitudes of 100 to 900 meters. It grows on fresh to moist, acidic to neutral, sandy to loamy, humus rich, moderately nutrient-rich soils in sunny to light-shaded, summer-cool locations. The Manchurian pipe bush is mostly frost hardy.

Systematics

The first description of Philadelphus tenuifolius was in 1856 by Franz Joseph Ruprecht in Carl Johann Maximowicz : Bulletin de la Classe Physico-Mathématique de l'Académie Impériale des Sciences de Saint-Pétersbourg , Volume 15, Page 133.

Of Philadelphus tenuifolius there are two varieties :

  • Philadelphus tenuifolius var. Latipetalus S.Y. Hu with round petals about 1 cm long and 0.95 cm wide
  • Philadelphus tenuifolius Rupr. ex Maxim. var. tenuifolius with 1 to 1.5 centimeters long and 0.6 to 1.3 centimeters wide, oval-elongated petals

use

The Manchurian pipe bush is rarely used as an ornamental plant because of its decorative flowers .
