Life

Manfred A. Schmid was one of four children of the school principal Eugen Schmid (1877-1965) and his wife Antonie Arnold Schmid (1886-1975). The eldest brother Hans, (1909–1970) was an engineer, lived and worked in Essen, his twin brother, brother Karl Eugen, became an internist, and his sister Elisabeth Friedeburg (1912–1994) was known as a prehistoric, geologist and paleontologist.

After attending secondary school, he completed an apprenticeship as a decorative painter. In 1929 he studied at the Baden State Art School in Karlsruhe. Manfred Schmid attended the painting class with Georg Scholz , the etching class with Prof. Walter Conz and was from 1932 to 1933 master class with Prof. Hermann Goebel's own studio . After defaming some teachers and artists and dismissing Prof. Georg Scholz, he withdrew as a master class student. From 1933 he spent two years at the Art Academy in Munich , Prof. Julius Hess's painting class. In this context, he completed Rubens studies in the Alte Pinakothek . Immediately before starting his military service, he acquired his master craftsman's certificate (March 4, 1940). The Second World War took him to France, Yugoslavia and Russia, where he was wounded in the Stalingrad pocket. He processed his war experiences in many sketches. He then worked as a freelance painter and church restorer in Freiburg-Zähringen . From 1960 to 1969 he was chairman of the Professional Association of Fine Arts in South Baden, alternating with sculptor Walter Schelenz . Until 2001 he carried out commissioned work.

Students included Erich Gantzert-Castrillo (* 1940) and the restorer Gerd Ester, who lives and works in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . and Peter Waldeis, former chief restorer at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt. (from Die Zeit No. 53/1987, "The dispute about the patina, Ver (bad) improvements")

Ceiling painting in the nave of St. Markus, Elgersweier (1962)

Manfred Schmid's first commission after the war was the wall design (fresco) at the Sporthaus Bohny in Freiburg i. Brg. His recent work also included the sgraffito next to the entrance to the Wolfenweiler winegrowers' cooperative, the design for the ground glass window between the consecration hall and the mortuary of the Freiburg main cemetery , as well as the ceiling painting (frescoes from 1962) in the parish church of St. Markus in Elgersweier near Offenburg.

Restorations (selection)

Schmid's first major order in 1936 was the interior design of St. Urban in Freiburg-Herdern , which he carried out together with his teacher, the painter Georg Scholz . In 1947 Manfred A. Schmid created the frescoes of the St. Felix monastery church in Neustadt an der Waldnaab and the ceiling painting of the picture chapel Maria vom Troste in Neustadt an der Waldnaab . In 1960 he designed the new main picture of the choir ceiling of the Church of St. Mary's Assumption in Ehrenkirchen-Kirchhofen , a Maria immaculata, after the previous picture was irreparably damaged. In 1963 his ceiling paintings (Resurrection of Jesus Christ, a Pentecost miracle and a picture of All Saints) replaced the previous paintings by Josef Kaltenbach (1869–1912) in the Church of St. Nicholas in Waldau . For the large altarpiece of St. Afra in Mühlebach he painted in 1982 Afra as the protector mill Bach .
