Manfred Böckl
Manfred Ludwig Böckl (born September 2, 1948 in Landau an der Isar ) is a German writer who has also published under the pseudonyms Thomas Drayton and Jean de Laforet .
Life
After graduating from high school in Dingolfing ( Lower Bavaria ), Manfred Böckl studied German, geography, law, history, philosophy, literary studies, psychology and theology at the University of Regensburg from 1968 to 1973 without obtaining a degree. From 1973 to the beginning of 1976 he was an editor at the Passauer Neue Presse ; since January 1976 he worked as a freelance writer. From 1992 to October 2008 he lived in the village of Salzweg north of Passau in the Bavarian Forest . He then moved to Empertsreut in the municipality of Perlesreut , where he bought a country house.
The author repeatedly traveled to the countries of Western Europe to research the history of the Celts; he is also researching Celtic roots in his Bavarian homeland. In a worldview, Manfred Böckl is committed to the New Paganism in the old European-Celtic tradition. He strives for a renaissance of the pre-Christian religion: the "return to paganism" postulated by him.

Manfred Böckl initially wrote (sometimes under a pseudonym together with Helmut Watzke) books for young people such as the series of the Blaue Rose secret society (1980 to 1984). From 1986 a series of novels on Bavarian history followed, and since the late 1980s Böckl has also published historical novels and non-fiction books on topics from German and European history.
Manfred Böckl wrote, among other things, about the persecution of witches , about renegades like the game shooter Georg Jennerwein , the Bavarian Forest robber Michael Heigl or the robber Mathias Kneißl , who rebelled against the social injustice of their time, and about women like Agnes Bernauer or Barbara Blomberg . Böckl also published numerous books on "prophets" such as Nostradamus or the Mühlhiasl . From 1999 onwards, the Celts became a special focus of his work , about whom he published several novels and non-fiction books.
In the story Die Einöder , published in 2007 , he left his traditional topics and used the example of the Bavarian Forest to describe the deadly effects the climate catastrophe will ultimately have on humanity if the course is not turned around.
The total circulation of Böckl's works is (as of 2007) around one million copies. His books have been translated into Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Bulgarian, Estonian, Dutch and Czech. In 1986 Böckl was the town clerk of Otterndorf and a Neumüller scholarship holder of the city of Regensburg .
