Manfred Gerhard Schmidt (born May 26, 1952 in Schmalkalden ) is a German epigraphist .

Scientific career

Manfred G. Schmidt studied law at the University of Tübingen in 1970/71 ; he had to interrupt his studies in 1971/72 to do his military service. In 1973 he continued his studies in Tübingen, but now studied history and, since 1975, also classical philology. 1973/74 he was at the University of Stuttgart . In 1978/79 he passed the first state examination in history and classical philology in Tübingen, where he became a doctoral candidate. With the dissertation Caesar and Cleopatra. Philological and historical commentary on Lucan 10.1–171 , Schmidt received his doctorate in 1985 under Joachim Dingel , the second reviewer was Ernst A. Schmidt . After completing his doctorate, he became a research assistant in the publication of the manual on the rise and decline of the Roman world . A year later he became a research assistant in the Inscriptiones Hispaniae Latinae (CIL II2) project of the Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy of the German Archaeological Institute in Munich. In the 1991/92 winter semester, Schmidt taught as an assistant at the Chair of Ancient History at the University of Passau , headed by Hartmut Wolff . In 1992 he became a research assistant in the Epigraphic Database Heidelberg project at Heidelberg University and the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences , led by Géza Alföldy . From 1995 to 2017 he headed the office for the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL) of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences (BBAW) in Berlin.

Since 1990 he has held several teaching positions in the subjects of Roman history, classical archeology and epigraphy: 1990/91 at the University of Munich , from 1992 to 1994 in Heidelberg, in 2002 at the University of Dresden and since 1999 at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In the fall of 2004, he was visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley .

In 2003 he co-organized the international congress on archeology and epigraphy , in 2006 the conference Chapeau, Mr. Dessau! A colloquium on the 150th birthday of the Berlin ancient historian and epigraphist , the AIEGL conference Viae publicae Romanae in 2010 and the XIVth International Congress for Greek and Latin Epigraphy in Berlin in 2012 . Schmidt became a member of the Association Internationale d 'Épigraphie Grecque et Latine (AIEGL) in 2002 and its vice-president in 2008, and its president from 2012 to 2017. He has been a corresponding member of the Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeologia since 2006 and a member of the scientific advisory board of the journals Exemplaria classica and Sylloge epigraphica Barcinonensis .
