Manfred Jung

Manfred Jung (* 9. July 1940 in Oberhausen , † 14. April 2017 in Essen ) was a German opera singer ( heroic tenor ) and Wagner - Artist .

Life

Manfred Jung came to his training as a power -Elektrotechniker as a lighting technician at the City Theater of Essen . In Essen he studied voice with Hilde Wesselmann at the Folkwang University and graduated in 1968 with the state examination. He then received engagements at the Chamber Opera in Cologne , from 1971 to 1975 an engagement at the music theater of the city of Dortmund , then at the theater in Kaiserslautern .

In 1975 Jung had his first guest performances at the “ Salzburg Easter Festival ” under Herbert von Karajan and in Jerusalem . After a guest performance in 1976 at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf / Duisburg, Jung received a contract until 1988. Also in 1976 he made guest appearances at the Theater of the City of Wuppertal and at the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken .

During a guest performance in Berlin in November 1976 he was recommended to the Bayreuth Festival and engaged as Siegfried in Götterdämmerung in the 1977 season for the production of the Ring of the Century . The music magazine Orpheus then awarded him in 1977 the award "The great praise". Since then, Jung sang various tenor roles in the following festival times.

The first international guest performances as a Wagner tenor came in 1980 at Carnegie Hall in New York City and in 1981 at the Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In 1982 he received the “ Grammy Award ” for the Bayreuth recording of the Ring des Nibelungen under Pierre Boulez as Siegfried in Siegfried and as Siegfried in Götterdämmerung .

Since then, Jung has made a name for himself around the world as a Wagner tenor. He was one of the few singers who sang all the tenor parts in Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen .

Since 2005, Jung has also been the artistic director of the “Young Musicians Foundation”, which organizes the “ Cantilena Singing Competition ” in Bayreuth . This is intended to promote young up-and-coming singers in various categories (opera, concert, operetta).
