Manfred Lämmer (born February 13, 1943 in Gladbeck ) is a German sport historian and professor emeritus at the German Sport University Cologne .

Professional career

Manfred lambs completed his high school at the high school Theodorianum in Paderborn . He then studied Latin , Greek and history at the University of Cologne as well as sports science at the sports university there . Since the mid-1960s, he has expanded the research focus “gymnastics and agonistics of Greco-Roman antiquity” with an extensive collection of sources and secondary literature. In 1967 he was awarded a Dr. phil. doctorate , his dissertation was on Olympics and Hadrians in ancient Ephesus . His habilitation thesis entitled The Significance of Epigraphic Evidence for the History of Greek Gymnastics and Agonistics also dealt with ancient sports history.

In 1975 Lämmer was appointed to the chair for sports history at the German Sports University and appointed head of the institute for sports history. His research interests include the history of gymnastics and athletics in Greco-Roman antiquity and their influence on modern sport, the history and ideology of the modern Olympic movement and sport in Judaism .

In 2010 Manfred Lämmer received the ISHPES Award from the International Society for History of Physical Education and Sport . The laudation stated that Lämmer, who had degrees in sports science, Greek , Latin and history, had combined this knowledge to research ancient sports and the Olympic movement.

Relations with Israel

In 1963 Manfred Lämmer was one of the first German sports group invited to Israel after the Second World War . In the following years he was involved as the Israel Commissioner at the Cologne Sports University in the initiation and maintenance of sports and sports science relations between Germany and Israel. Lämmer assigns a special function to sport, especially soccer, as a "bridge builder" between the two countries. From 1971 to 2009 he was coordinator of the partnership between the sports university and the “Wingate Institute for Physical Education and Sport” in Netanya . He has been teaching at Israeli universities several times, and since 2009 he has headed the research project “The Contribution of Sport to the Development of German-Israeli Relations”. In February 2015, he and Markwart Herzog led the conference “German-Israeli Football Friendship” at the Swabian Academy in Irsee, Bavaria . In 2019, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class , for his services to German-Israeli relations .

Olympic games

From 1972 to 2004 Lämmer was involved in the preparation of the content and scientific support for all Olympic Games for the German NOK . Lämmer has been a member of the board of directors of the German Olympic Institute and the German Olympic Academy since 1993 , and for many years he was vice-president and member of the executive committee of the German Olympic Society . From 2003 to 2004 he was a member of the application committee of düsseldorf rhein-ruhr 2012 for the 2012 Summer Olympics .
