He then worked for the entire Mannheim parish as site manager for the reconstruction of the St. Clara retirement home. From 1952 he worked at the Archbishopric Heidelberg of the Archdiocese of Freiburg , in 1956 he became an unscheduled construction assessor and representative of the service board, 1961 construction officer, 1963 head of the planning department. Manfred Schmitt-Fiebig designed numerous new Catholic church buildings or extensions in the north of the Archdiocese of Freiburg. Some of his buildings were controversial, such as the design for the parish church of St. Bartholomew in Heidelberg- Wieblingen (1955/56), which in its modern form and with the free-standing campanile was initially rejected by the community. While St. Bartholomew is reminiscent of traditional longitudinal church buildings, albeit with modern materials, his later buildings have free floor plans and rely on a close connection between the people and the sanctuary in accordance with the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council . In particular, St. Michael in the Heidelberg Südstadt , built in 1962/63 on a pentagonal ground plan, used new forms, was a model for many later church buildings and was placed under monument protection as a type-defining monument.
