Athletic career

After the end of the Second World War , the SG Weimar Ost was one of the strongest football teams in Thuringia . In 1948 they became Thuringian champions with the 21-year-old goalkeeper Manfred Schuster and thus qualified for the first soccer east zone championship in 1948 . Weimar made it to the semi-finals and was only defeated there by the later east zone master SG Planitz with 0: 5. In 1950 the Weimar team, which had meanwhile been restructured into the company sports community (BSG) KWU, were again Thuringian champions. As such, they rose to the DS-Oberliga . They went with the new name BSG Turbine and goalkeeper Schuster in the 1950/51 season, who played all 34 league point games. The BSG turbine just missed relegation and was relegated to the GDR league . Schuster stayed with the Weimar team until 1954, after which he moved to the GDR champion SC Turbine Erfurt for the 1954/55 season.

After the suspension of their previous goalkeeper Heinz Grünbeck, Erfurt started the new season with three new goalkeepers. Since coach Hans Carl placed his trust in Rolf Jahn from the start and used him in 24 of 26 point games, Schuster was only used in one league game alongside Jupp Simon . Turbine Erfurt successfully defended the championship title, and so Schuster could also call himself a GDR master. In the fall of 1955, a transition round was held in GDR football in order to be able to play in a calendar year rhythm from 1956 onwards. During this round, Schuster was loaned to his former community, now acting as BSG Lok Weimar in the third-class II. GDR League . For the league season in 1956 he was once again included as a goalkeeper in the squad of Turbine Erfurt, but was no longer used.

Meanwhile 30 years old, Schuster went back to Weimar again in 1957 and rejoined the BSG Lok Weimar, which in the meantime played again in the first GDR league. There he remained active as a goalkeeper until 1960. In his seven Weimar GDR league seasons, Schuster was used 142 times in 176 point games.
