Manseng Noir

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manseng Noir is an old red grape variety that is grown in the Sud-Ouest wine-growing region in southwest France . It is part of Appellations - wines Béarn , otherwise it is but rarely used.

The red wines are deeply colored and rich in tannins ( tannins ). Due to the high acid content , the wines require a long bottle aging before tannins and acid are presented in a balanced ratio. The variety can therefore hardly be marketed and the area under vines fell from 790 hectares in 1958 to around 4 hectares in 1999.

In the past, the grape variety in the region around Irouléguy was grown in a mixed set with the Courbu Noir grape variety and marketed under the undifferentiated term Noirs du Pays (herriko beltza).

A study published in 2007 shows that the grape varieties Baroque , Manseng Noir and Tannat are genetically very closely related. There is also a striking similarity to the Malbec variety and the Claverie variety is also genetically closely related to this group. The Raffiat de Moncade variety also shows related characteristics.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy white, with a carmine-red tinge. The green young leaves are still slightly woolly hairy and spotted in bronze color (anthocyanin spots)
  • The rounded leaves (see also the article leaf shape ) are unbent or three-lobed. The stalk bay is lyren-shaped open. The leaf margin is bluntly serrated. The teeth are set wide compared to other grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The cylindrical grape is small to medium-sized and quite dense. The round berries are small to medium in size. When fully ripe, they are deep blue to black in color.

The Manseng Noir grape variety ripens around 25 days after the Gutedel and is therefore internationally considered to ripen late for a grape variety. The variety is hardly susceptible to powdery mildew and is considered to be high-yielding.
