The ovoid

Manuel Casimiro de Oliveira (born November 21, 1941 in Porto ) is a Portuguese painter , sculptor , designer and film director . He has spent a large part of his life abroad, especially in Nice . He had withdrawn there after being wounded during the Portuguese colonial war in Angola . He currently lives in Porto.

Life

Casimiro was born into a wealthy family. His father is the film director Manoel de Oliveira . After serving in the military and being wounded in the Angola War, Casimiro decided to devote himself entirely to art. After leaving Portugal to live abroad, mainly in Nice , he lived in "quasi-poverty" for many years. Here he made friends with Vincent Descombes , Jean-François Lyotard and Michel Butor . In 1978 he lived in New York City for a year , which was also where his first major collective exhibition was held. Selling some paintings enabled him to travel to some northern European countries. He also spent some time in Italy , particularly Venice . There he met and photographed Peggy Guggenheim at her foundation shortly before she died in 1979. This encounter should have a lasting impact on him.

The ovoid

Casimiro values the idea inherent in the work of art. The ovoid and its use in procedures and other work provides a focus through which the work of art can be reevaluated and reconsidered. The artist himself rarely speaks about the ovoid and leaves it to the viewer to find meaning in the egg-shaped shape.
