After attending a humanistic grammar school , Etzel joined the 18th Infantry Regiment "Prince Ludwig Ferdinand" of the Bavarian Army in Landau in the Palatinate as a volunteer on August 7, 1890 . There he was promoted to secondary lieutenant on March 5, 1892 after attending war school . As a first lieutenant , Etzel then graduated from the War Academy from 1901 to 1904 , which made him qualified for brigadjutantur. In mid-December 1905 he was transferred as an adjutant to the 12th Infantry Brigade in Regensburg , where he was promoted to captain on June 23, 1907 . As such, Etzel was company commander in the 9th Infantry Regiment "Wrede" from November 18, 1908, and on January 7, 1914, he became a major .

With the outbreak of World War I , Etzel was appointed commander of the 4th Battalion of the 4th Reserve Infantry Regiment. With the regiment he took part in the fighting in Lorraine and later in France. In 1915 Etzel returned to the 9th Infantry Regiment "Wrede" and took over the 2nd Battalion. In the following years he continued to work on the Western Front, rose to deputy regimental commander in 1917 and finally became commander of the 10th Reserve Infantry Regiment on March 28, 1918.

After the Armistice of Compiègne , Etzel led the remnants of his regiment back home, where it arrived in Straubing on December 15, 1918, was demobilized and disbanded on December 19, 1918. Etzel was then transferred back to the 9th Infantry Regiment "Wrede" and acted there as the commander of the settlement center. Once again this regiment had been demobilized and disbanded, followed by his transfer to the Provisional Reichswehr and its use as a staff officer in the Reichswehr Infantry Regiment 45. In the course of further army reduction and creation of the actual Reichswehr came Etzel as a lieutenant colonel in the 20th (Bavarian ) Infantry Regiment and was promoted to colonel there on April 1, 1922. Two years later, Etzel received the post of Commandant of Magdeburg . From this position he was recalled on January 30, 1926 and then retired from active military service with the character of major general.
