Manuel Eguiguren Galarraga

Manuel Eguiguren Galarraga OFM (born January 1, 1930 in Boyás near Goiatz , Gipuzkoa , Autonomous Community of Basque Country ; † July 15, 2012 in Bizkaia , Basque Country) was a Spanish religious and auxiliary bishop in El Beni o Beni . He was referred to as the "Indian Bishop".

Life

Manuel Eguiguren Galarraga came with 15 years in the Minor Seminary, and at age 24 the Congregation of the Franciscan at. He was ordained a priest on March 13, 1954 . After pastoral work and training for missionary work in Bermeo in the Spanish Basque Country, he came to Latin America in 1961 with 90 other young priests and missionaries and worked as a priest in Ecuador , Colombia , Dominican Republic and El Salvador for four years . After spending eleven years in Montevideo , Uruguay , he worked in a slum in Buenos Aires , Argentina, during the dictatorship of Jorge Rafael Videla , and then in a slum in Paraguay during the dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner .

On November 30, 1981, Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Salapia and auxiliary bishop in the Vicariate Apostolic El Beni o Beni in the Beni department in northeastern Bolivia , bordering the Brazilian Amazon basin . The Apostolic Nuncio in Bolivia Alfio Rapisarda donated him episcopal ordination on April 18 of the following year ; Co- consecrators were Carlos Anasagasti Zulueta OFM, Vicar Apostolic of El Beni o Beni, and Luis Aníbal Rodríguez Pardo , Archbishop of Santa Cruz de la Sierra . He was awarded the Bolivian Human Rights Prize for his work and commitment to the indigenous peoples.
