Location of Marandet in Niger

Marandet (also Marandat , on Tuareg Mărăndat , historically Maranda ) is a village in the municipality of Aderbissinat in Niger .

Marandet is located southwest of the city of Agadez at the foot of the Tiguidit step , which here reaches a height of 150 meters. The Kori Marandet , a seasonal water-bearing river, runs near the village . Marandet had 743 people in 143 households at the 1988 census, 310 people in 57 households at the 2001 census, and 652 people in 117 households at the 2012 census.

In the area around the settlement numerous finds from the Iron Age have been made. Along with Takedda, it is one of the ancient centers of the Aïr Mountains . The early Arab geographers knew them by the name Maranda , so they called them al-Yaʿqūbī in 872, al-Masʿūdī , Ibn al-Faqih and Ibn Hauqal in the 10th century and al-Idrisi in the 12th century. To the east of the village is the Tawachi dinosaur cemetery , where an American palaeontologist team led by Paul Sereno uncovered completely preserved skeletons of the genera Jobaria and Afrovenator in 2000 and 2001 . With Sereno's support, the village community founded an organization to promote the paleontological heritage, which protects the fossils from erosion damage during the rainy season and offers guided tours of the dinosaur cemetery.
