Marc Tardue

Marc Tardue (born November 8, 1951 in Chicago ) is an American conductor . From 1991 to 2002 he was chief conductor of the Biel Symphony Orchestra (Switzerland) and from 1999 to the end of 2007 chief conductor of the Orquestra Nacional do Porto (Portugal). From 2012 to 2017 he was general music director of the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra , and since October 2018 he has been chief conductor of the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra.

Live and act

Until 1984

Marc Tardue, son of Franco-Italian parents, graduated from the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and then studied with Alexander Lipsky and Wiktor Labunsky (piano) as well as with Frederik Prausnitz , Leo Müller and Constantin Bugeanu (conducting). Marc Tardue is also a trained singing teacher (lessons with Marilyn Cotlow) and has worked as a piano accompanist in the master classes of Eileen Farell , Beverly Sills , Tito Gobbi , Gabriel Bacquier and Francesco Valentino .

Shortly after completing his studies, he received engagements as musical director and chief conductor from American chorale, symphony and opera ensembles. From 1982 to 1984 Marc Tardue was chief conductor of the National Opera of Reykjavík (Iceland) and performed with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra in concerts and tours.

1984 to 1990

In 1984 he won third prize at the Concours International d'Éxecution Musicale “Ernest Ansermet” (CIEM) international conducting competition in Geneva. Marc Tardue then regularly accompanied the CIEM competitions with the Orchester de la Suisse Romande . He was heard on radio and Eurovision broadcasts as well as on the award-winning CD series by Musica Helvetica , which was distributed annually to over 700 radio stations worldwide.

In 1985 Tardue took over performances of Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the Ensemble Instrumentale de Grenoble (EIG) at short notice and was so acclaimed by both the audience and the musicians that the orchestra immediately elected him music director. Under his direction (until 1995), the chamber music and contemporary EIG repertoire was expanded to include the great symphonies as well as operatic and choral works.

Artists like Lucia Popp , Yuri Bashmet , Gabriel Bacquier, Aldo Ciccolini , Pierre Amoyal , Maurice André and Jean Philippe Collard were among the regular guest soloists of the orchestra, which has given concerts in Europe, the USA and Australia. The discography of Marc Tardue and the EIG includes more than 20 records and CDs that were recorded for the international labels Forlane, Arion, Gallo Quantum and Skarbo. In 1995 the conductor and orchestra received the Grand Prix du Disque of the Charles Cros Academy , Paris, for the recording of Songs for the dead soldiers by the French composer Aubert Lemeland (Skarbo Records).

1991 to 2011

From 1991 to 2002 Marc Tardue was chief conductor of the Biel Symphony Orchestra (Switzerland), where he was responsible for both symphonic concerts and as general music director for opera productions at the Biel Solothurn Theater .

From 1999 to the end of 2007 he was chief conductor of the Orquestra Nacional do Porto (Portugal), which he gave a new profile within a short time and which he expanded in 2000 from a classical-size orchestra to its current symphonic format. Solo guests include: Natalia Gutman , Brigitte Engerer, Júlia Várady , Nora Chastain, Mischa Maisky , Martin Fröst , Pieter Wispelwey , Steven Isserlis, Daniel Raiskin and Jean Philippe Collard. And the opera repertoire also gained importance; New productions of Don Giovanni , La Bohème , Falstaff , Le Nozze di Figaro , Carmen , Il Trovatore and Die Fledermaus followed .

2012 to 2017

In spring 2012 Tardue was introduced as general music director of the Jena Philharmonic. He has led the Thuringian Symphony Orchestra since September 2012. In the 2016/17 season, his work as chief conductor of the orchestra ended.
