Marc Zanussi

Marc Zanussi (born on March 11, 1959 in Dudelange ; died on June 24, 2004 in the English Channel ) was a Luxembourgish politician of the LSAP and a sports official. From February 1990 until his death, he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies , the state parliament and president of the national gymnastics association .

Career

Zanussi was a trained locksmith and employed by the state railway company CFL , at the same time he was involved in a union . He was active in party politics from a young age, from 1978 to 1986 Zanussi was General Secretary of the Socialist Youth , the LSAP's youth organization . Later he held a full-time secretary position at the parent party, which he had to give up when he moved into the chamber.

Politician

In the 1989 chamber election , Zanussi ran in the southern constituency and ended up only in 14th place out of nine seats the party was entitled to. But since Jacques Poos , Johny Lahure and Alex Bodry , who were lying in front of him, could not take their seats because they switched to the government bench, Maurice Thoss resigned his mandate and Benny Berg waived his successor, Zanussi finally became on February 13, 1990 sworn in as a member of parliament. In the subsequent elections in 1994 and 1999 , he was able to successfully defend his mandate.

During his time in the Chamber, the focus of his political work was on the transport sector, and so Zanussi also chaired the Parliamentary Committee on Transport. Here he excelled, among other things, by dealing with the so-called "Kralowetz Affair", in which it was discovered in 2002 that a freight forwarding company had employed drivers from Eastern Bloc countries at dumping wages, or the way the government and Luxair dealt with the relatives of the victims of the plane crash on November 6, 2002 . Another focus of Zanussi was education policy; here he was also active outside parliament as chairman of an association for the promotion of reading and spelling weaknesses .

Street sign in Dudelange

In the election on June 13, 2004 he succeeded in entering the chamber again. As he in his native Dudelange since 1984 as a council and since 1991 as a lay judge had acted, he also was seen as a promising successor to Mayor Di Bartolomeo , who was assigned as Minister of Health and therefore had to resign from that post. Before these considerations could be implemented, Zanussi died on June 24th in a surfing accident on the coast of the English Channel. He left behind his wife and two sons.

At the time of his death, Zanussi had been chairman of the national gymnastics federation Fédération luxembourgeoise de Gymnastique (FLGym) for four years . Roger Negri , who succeeded him in parliament, would later hold this office until 2012. In his hometown Dudelange, a square was later named after Zanussi.
