Marcantonio Negri
Marcantonio Negri (also Marc'Antonio Negri ; * in Verona ; † before October 3, 1624 in Veglia , today Croatia ) was an Italian singer and composer of the early Baroque period . He was a contemporary and collaborator of Claudio Monteverdi at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice .
Live and act
Negri was probably born in Verona at the beginning of the 1580s, where he went through school and enjoyed the protection of Alberto Valier , who became Bishop of Verona in 1591. After his ordination , Negri was hired on December 22, 1612 as tenor and assistant Kapellmeister ( maestro di cappella ) at St. Mark's Basilica, shortly before the position of first Kapellmeister was given to Monteverdi. In 1616 Negri on the island of Veglia, Dalmatia (today Krk in Croatia ) received the monastery of San Michele from Doge Giovanni Bembo as a benefice and became its abbot. At the same time he kept some part-time positions in Venice and had to represent Monteverdi in his absence. In 1619 he resigned from his position at St. Mark's Basilica, and was succeeded by Alessandro Grandi . Negri died in Veglia before October 3, 1624, on which date his successor was appointed.
Negri published two books of secular music under the title Affetti amorosi . The first dates from 1608 and contains 21 poems set to music, among others by Giovanni Battista Guarini and Giambattista Marino , in the then modern three-part canzonetta style, with chromatic turns and basso continuo . It is dedicated to the Venetian nobles Giacomo and Andrea Morosini . The second contains early examples of trio sonatas for two violins and continuo, as well as some symphonies with battle music , with the violins imitating trumpet fanfares. This style was adopted by both Monteverdi and Grandi.
Negri also published sacred music in the style of the polychoral style cultivated at St. Mark's Basilica , including a book with seven-part psalm settings (1613) dedicated to Alberto Valier and one with sacred songs (1618). Both works were published in Venice. The composer Lucia Quinciani was one of Negri's students .
In 1613 there was a dispute over competence between Negri and the director of the singing ensemble of St. Mark's Basilica, Gasparo Locadello. He was of the opinion that the direction of choir performances outside the basilica was his as the elected choirmaster and not the vice conductor, which was confirmed by the reigning Doge Marcantonio Memmo .
