Marcel Lepper

Marcel Lepper (born 1977 ) is a literary scholar, director of the Goethe and Schiller Archives , Weimar, and associate professor for modern German literature at the University of Stuttgart .

Lepper studied German , history and philosophy in Münster, Paris, Baltimore and Berlin. In 2005 he took over the management of the department for research into the history of German studies at the German Literature Archive in Marbach . He received his doctorate in 2006 from the Free University of Berlin . From 2008 to 2018 he headed the research department at the German Literature Archive in Marbach. Lepper has conducted guest research at Johns Hopkins University , the University of Wisconsin, Madison , the University of Kent, Canterbury , Princeton University and Cambridge University . Lepper completed his habilitation in 2015 at the University of Stuttgart. In 2018 he was appointed head of the literary archive of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, and an associate professor at the University of Stuttgart. In 2020 he was appointed director of the Goethe and Schiller Archives by the Board of Trustees of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar . He writes regularly on the humanities for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Neue Zürcher Zeitung .

Research priorities

His work deals with modern German literature in an international context. The focus is on the history of ideas, the history of science , textual criticism, provenance research , literary and archive theory. Between 2006 and 2018 he was co-editor of the magazine "Geschichte der Germanistik". At the German Literature Archive in Marbach, together with university partners, he designed the Suhrkamp Research College, which was funded by the Volkswagen Foundation , as well as Yfaat Weiss and Jürgen Fohrmann and the Federal Foreign Office for the office for Jewish-German estates in Israel. At the Akademie der Künste he led the transnational project " Heinrich Mann Digital".
