Marco Gallio , also called Galli or Gallo (* 1619 in Como , † July 24, 1683 in Rome ), was an Italian cardinal and Catholic bishop .

Life

Marco Gallio was born in Como in 1619 as a member of the noble Gallio family, which also included Cardinal Tolomeo . He was the son of Francesco I. Gallio, III. Duke of Alvito , and his wife Giustina Borromeo, through whom he was also related to Saint Charles Borromeo . Through his grandmother, Ersilia Farnese, he was also a direct descendant of Pope Paul III.

Marco was sent to Rome to pursue an ecclesiastical career. After graduating in 1645 as a Doctor of Law in utroque iure , he became trainee lawyer in the Apostolic Signature , Apostolic Protonotary and Secretary of the Congregation for the Sacred Rites . In order to delay the ordination he moved to the civil administration and became governor of Ascoli , Perugia , Ancona and Macerata as well as prefect of Umbria and the Marche .

Marco Gallio was elected Bishop of Rimini on June 13, 1659 , with dispensation because he had not yet reached the required age. The consecration took place on January 26, 1659 in the Church of Santa Maria in Vallicella in Rome by Cardinal Federico Sforza . From October 9, 1659 to 1666 he was sent to Cologne as apostolic nuncio . From July 1666 to February 1667 he held the office of Vice-tenant of the Roman diocese. On February 19, 1668 he was appointed Nuncio in Naples, held this office until 1671 and then returned to his diocese.

Pope Innocent XI. raised him in the consistory of September 1, 1681 to the rank of cardinal priest and he received the cardinal's hat on November 17, 1681 and the titular church of San Pietro in Montorio . He was also to be appointed cardinal legate of Bologna . During the preparations for his inauguration, however, he died on July 24, 1683 at the age of 64 of a stroke in his residence, the Palazzo Bonelli, in Piazza XII Apostoli. The burial took place on July 26, 1683 in the church of Santa Maria della Scala in Rome in an unadorned tomb.
