Marennes is a town and a former French commune with 5,632 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Rochefort and the Canton of Marennes .
Marennes is one of the most important French oyster farming areas .
With effect from January 1, 2019, the former municipalities of Marennes and Hiers-Brouage were merged to form the Commune nouvelle Marennes-Hiers-Brouage and have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are located in Marennes.

Marennes is located at the mouth of the Seudre , on the west coast of France, approx. 520 km from Paris . The next big city La Rochelle can be reached in 51 minutes by car.
