Margarethe Jockusch was a daughter of Otto Heinzelmann , who co-founded the bookstore Sachse & Heinzelmann. She attended the Elisabeth Granier School and passed her Abitur there. Then she trained as a bookseller at Graefe & Unzer in Königsberg .

After the death of her father in 1930, she and her sister Herta took over the management of the bookstore. In the same year she married the assistant Robert Jockusch, who had been employed in the shop since 1926 (born December 3, 1906 in Wilhelmshaven; † April 1, 1984 in Hanover).

During the National Socialist era , Margarethe Jockusch became a member of the Goethe Society in Hanover in 1937 . After the building with the bookstore at Georgstrasse 22 had been destroyed in 1943 by the air raids on Hanover in World War II , Jockusch ventured a fresh start in her house in Hanover-Kirchrode , then continued the business in a makeshift shop in Podbielskistraße and finally in one New building erected by the architect Adolf Falke on the site of the old parent company.

A short time after the war, in 1948, after eleven years of membership, the bookseller became managing director and board member (until 1989) of the Goethe Society in Hanover . By 1963 she organized around 400 events, mostly in the rooms of her bookstore, with lectures and readings by well-known writers, publishers and scientists.

Due to an eye problem, Margarethe Jockusch was forced to reduce her work early on.
