history

The expansion of the Margraviate of Brandenburg from the Havel (the previous border town was Spandau ) to and over the Oder took place around 1230, so it coincided with the transition from Romanesque to Gothic styles . The suburbium Eversberg developed at the foot of the Schlossberg , which later became Jacobsdorf zu Eberswalde . Before the city was founded, the first residents of Eversberg erected a church building near the margravial castle. Hardly anything is known about the predecessor building, which was probably consecrated between 1241 and 1251, with three aisles. Assumptions that today's church building could still contain part of the old one can only be confirmed or refuted through more intensive research into the building.

The current Gothic town church was built from 1333. The steeple is bricked . Fundamental changes to the design were made in 1503 after the city fire of 1499 and again in 1726. The Reformation entered the region in 1539. The first Protestant service took place in 1542. In 1632 the fallen King of Sweden Gustav II Adolf was laid out in the Maria Magdalenen Church. In 1876 the church was comprehensively renovated under Hermann Blankenstein . He had the basilica character of the building worked out more, whereby the parallels with the nearby Chorin monastery church were reinforced. The choir got the high Gothic windows with tracery back, friezes were attached to the cornice , and Gothic gables to the chapels and in front of the aisles. The tower was completed according to a design by Friedrich August Stüler . Valuable terracotta reliefs from the time the church was built were used to decorate the portal. A comprehensive interior renovation took place in 1977. The exterior facade could only be renewed in 1993. The archaeological excavations carried out during the new construction of the church square in 2001 brought to light a late medieval smithy furnace and the foundations of the Latin school from the 16th century. The Barbaraglocke, cast in 1518, was given a new place in front of the church in 2001 because its cast body showed a crack. The action was financed with funds from urban development funding. To this end, the community installed a new bell in October 2002 , made by the Rudolf Perner bell foundry .

On December 2, 2019, there was a fire in the church building. It was badly damaged in the process. The amount of damage is in the six-digit range. The repair work should take one to two years.
