The Maria-von-Linden-Gymnasium (short: MvLGym) is named after the natural scientist Maria von Linden and is located in Calw - Stammheim in the northern Black Forest. Together with the Hermann-Hesse-Gymnasium, the MvLG is one of the two general high schools in the city of Calw. It is characterized by a scientific and a physical education focus.

History and naming

Countess Maria von Linden after a picture by court photographer Julius Wilhelm Hornung in Tübingen

The Maria-von-Linden-Gymnasium goes back to the Hermann-Hesse-Gymnasium in Calw. The latter, in turn, has its roots in the Latin school in Calw, where the first lessons were held in 1435. In 1696 this school was given a new building near downtown Calw, which the writer Hermann Hesse also visited from 1886. The Hermann-Hesse-Gymnasium has been located at its current location on Schießberg since 1925. Due to the increasing number of schoolchildren, a division of the location was necessary in 1980, which resulted in the building of today's MvLG on Schindelbergweg. From then on, classes five to eleven were taught at both locations. However, the upper school level was exclusively on Schindelbergweg. Although the two locations are about five kilometers apart, they belonged to the same school for almost 20 years. At the beginning of the 1999/2000 school year, it became two independent grammar schools: the Hermann-Hesse-Gymnasium in downtown Calw and the MvLG in Calw-Stammheim.

The school is named after Maria von Linden . She was the first female student in Württemberg . In addition, she was the first woman in Germany to be awarded a doctorate in natural sciences . The scientific focus of the MvLG is based on this.

The motto of the Maria-von-Linden-Gymnasium is based on the quote "Barriers are there to be jumped over" by Maria von Linden.
