Maria Anna of Bavaria (born December 18, 1574 in Munich , † March 8, 1616 in Graz ) was Princess of Bavaria and Archduchess of Austria by marriage .

Life

Maria Anna was the second daughter of Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria (1548–1626) and his wife Renata of Lorraine (1544–1602).

On April 23, 1600, Maria Anna married her cousin, the later Roman-German Emperor , Archduke Ferdinand II of Austria (1578–1637), eldest son of Archduke Charles II of Inner Austria-Styria (1540–1590) in the Hofkirche in Graz . and Maria Anna von Bayern (1551–1608), a daughter of Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria . The wedding was celebrated by the papal legate, Cardinal Dietrichstein . With this marriage, the connection between the Habsburgs and the Wittelsbach family was re- affirmed. Without interfering in politics, Maria Anna lived by her husband's side. Following the tradition of her dynasty, she was very pious and attended several masses every day.

Maria Anna had been ill for a long time when she died of a "hot fever" in 1616 at the age of 41, before Ferdinand was crowned King of Bohemia and King of Hungary and before he was made King of the Romans . Her body was buried in the mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II (Graz) .
