Marianne Maret (2019)

Marianne Maret (* 15. June 1958 as Marianne Bachmann in Sion ) is a Swiss politician ( CVP ) from the canton of Valais . She was the first woman to preside over a municipality in Valais. In 2019 she was elected to the Council of States as the first woman for the canton of Valais .

Political career

After 19 years as a housewife, the trained business woman devoted herself to her career as a politician. She has been a member of Troistorrents' council since 1997 . In 2004, she was there to commune president elected. She held this position until 2012.

In 2009 Marianne Maret became a member of the Valais Grand Council . She was re-elected in 2013 and 2017 and was a member of the Board of Directors from 2017 to 2019. Her role caused controversy in the case of whistleblower Joël Rossier.

From 2009 to 2013 she was President of the Valais Association of Municipalities. Appointed by the Valais State Council, she has chaired the Foundation for the Sustainable Development of Mountain Regions since May 1, 2013. She is Vice President of the CVP Wallis.

Council of States member

In 2019 she joined the CVP alongside Beat Rieder as the successor to Jean-René Fournier's seat on the Council of States . In the first round she received 39,660 votes and came second. In the second ballot she ran against the social democrat Mathias Reynard , whom she beat with a difference of 1,370 votes. This made her the first woman to represent the canton of Valais in the Council of States. In the first interviews, she was surprised and statements from her triggered a media shit storm. She was sworn in as a Councilor of States on December 2, 2019.
