The Marie-Curie-Gymnasium (short: MCG ), until 1995 Kreisgymnasium Kirchzarten is a high school in Kirchzarten in the Dreisamtal east of Freiburg im Breisgau in the sponsorship of the district Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald .

history

In February 1970, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Culture decided to set up a Progymnasium in Kirchzarten in order to improve the offer for students from the Dreisamtal and the neighboring communities who had previously had to travel to Freiburg. In 1972 construction began on an education center , which was to combine a secondary school , a secondary school and a grammar school under one roof.

In September 1974, classes began with 8 classes, 235 students and 12 teachers. The acting headmaster was Adolf J. Schmid . Two years later, the Ministry of Culture approved an extension to the fully developed grammar school and Schmid was officially appointed headmaster.

In 1981 the first graduation class with 40 students was ceremoniously adopted. The school grew rapidly, developed a profile in terms of content, organization and structure, an important focus early on was a large number of school partnerships and the like. a. in England, France, USA and Russia.

In July 1995 the Kirchzarten district high school was named Marie-Curie-Gymnasium after the two-time Polish Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie .

In September 2007 the new Dreisamtal school house was officially inaugurated. In July 2009, the Freiburg Regional Council approved the establishment of an open all-day school at the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium. In July 2011, the two early cohorts of G 8 and G 9 passed their Abitur together.

At the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium today around 650 students are taught by around 65 teachers.

Departments

Language education

In 5th grade, students can choose between English and French as their first foreign language. From the 6th grade onwards, the second foreign language is English, French or Latin. Spanish is possible as a third foreign language.

Natural sciences

From the 8th grade onwards, in addition to biology, physics and chemistry, students can focus on science and technology with interdisciplinary and practice-oriented work. Topics from the everyday experience of the students are examined scientifically, the experiment is the focus and technical skills in handling tools and machines are taught.

Social sciences

In the social science subjects geography, social studies, history, religion and ethics, special emphasis is placed on the use of modern and student-activating methods and the integration of extracurricular learning locations.

Sport, art, music

In the musical subjects of art, music and sport, the main focus is on enjoying one's own actions. Pupils can form personal focus here. In all subjects, projects offer opportunities for engagement beyond school obligations (big band, musical, hip-hop, Fresbee, youth training for the Olympics , stage design, participation in nationwide art competitions, etc.)

Electives

Computer science and literature & theater are offered as electives . In the course level, seminar courses are offered in which independent and self-organized work as well as university-related, adult-friendly working methods are taught, which are geared towards study and career preparation.

Working groups

Working groups are offered in the field of event technology, electronics and IT, languages, music, dance and sport, mathematics and chess, cooking and the common good (medical services, conflict resolution).
