Marie Purvis , married Morgan , (born September 24, 1961 in Manchester ) is a former English cyclist .

Marie Purvis was born in Manchester; when she was twelve, her family moved to the Isle of Man . There she started with athletics and won several regional titles. At the age of 19 she was injured and gave up all sports. In 1987, at the age of 26, she started cycling because she was not feeling fit and stayed with it even though she was hit by a car in the first few weeks of training. She was now married to one of the island's top cyclists, John Purvis, who had finished fourth in road racing at the 1978 Commonwealth Games .

Purvis became one of the best British cyclists of the 1990s. In 1990 she started the road race at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand , but, to her own great disappointment, only finished 24th. In the same year she became British road champion for the first time, a success she achieved in 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1995 could repeat. In 1994 she finished fourth in the Commonwealth Games road race and became the first woman in 40 years to win the traditional road race Willaston Handicap .

In 1995 she switched to the track for the first time and set a new British hour record on March 10 this year at the Manchester Velodrome . It improved the existing record of Mandy Jones from 1981 by two to 43.492 kilometers.

Marie Purvis started twice at the Olympic Games in road races: in 1992 in Barcelona she finished 24th and 1996 in Atlanta 11th. In 1993 Purvis was the first British woman to win a stage of the Grande Boucle Féminine , and in 1995 she succeeded again. In 1993 she was also sixth overall.

1996 Purvis resigned from competitive cycling. Since then she has been active as a long-distance runner . She also successfully took part in mountain bike races for everyone. In 2014 she was Team Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Ambassador . Professionally she works as a trainer.
