The Mariella is a vehicle ferry that was built at the Finnish Wärtsilä - Perno shipyard in Turku . At times she was used for short cruises.

history

The ship was launched on September 28, 1984 and was put into service on May 17, 1985 by the SF Line (now Viking Line ). When the Mariella started traffic, she was the first ship of the Viking Line, which served the route Helsinki - Mariehamn - Stockholm and did not belong to the shipping company Ab Sally . With a few exceptions due to maintenance work, the Mariella has been traveling on the same route since it was commissioned. This makes it the record holder of the longest uninterrupted service on the Helsinki – Stockholm route. When it was delivered, the Mariella was the largest ferry in the world in terms of carrying capacity and passenger capacity.

When the Estonia sank in 1994, the Mariella was the first ship to arrive at the site of the accident. 15 survivors were rescued from the water by the crew, a further 11 survivors were brought on board by helicopter, as the Mariella was used as a helicopter base for the rescue operation.

In the 1996 summer season, Mariella operated short cruises from Helsinki to Tallinn. However, these cruises, which were carried out during the time when the ship was normally staying in Helsinki for nine hours, did not meet with the hoped-for response and were no longer offered after this summer.

In order to be able to continue to offer tax-free goods on board after the end of the tax-free sale in the EU, a stopover in Mariehamn was introduced in July 1999 . It is possible to resell the goods as Åland is exempt from sales and consumption tax regulations in the European Union.

In September 2000 the Mariella in Naantali was equipped with stabilizers at the stern and a new, fast lifeboat. During this stay in the shipyard, the interior was also renovated. The disco was moved from deck 8 to deck 7. For some time the Mariella had the words Updated 06/10 2000 on its hull.

Another major renovation also took place in Naantali in September 2006. During this renovation, a restaurant, the perfumery and the tax free shop were completely refurbished. A completely new restaurant was also built right next to the Food Garden Restaurant.

The sister ship of the Mariella is the Princess Anastasia (formerly Olympia , Pride of Bilbao , Bilbao ) which now operates between Russia , Finland , Åland , Sweden and Estonia .
